This advancement is made possible through a partnership between e& UAE and Al Yah Satellite Communications Company, as part of the former's direct-to-device (D2D) strategy. This strategy aims to equip standard smartphones with advanced satellite capabilities, eliminating the need for bulky satellite devices traditionally required for such connectivity.

Under this partnership, e& UAE and Yahsat will collaborate on Yahsat's planned low-earth orbit (LEO) D2D system, designed to offer seamless connectivity for standard smartphones globally. This technology promises unparalleled levels of connectivity and accessibility, marking a significant leap in satellite communication capabilities.

Initially, the focus will be on providing voice and messaging services in the current year, with plans to introduce texting and Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities by 2025, utilizing Yahsat's geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites. Masood M. Sharif Mahmood, CEO of e& UAE, views this partnership as a gateway to a new era of global connectivity, emphasizing its role in bridging the digital divide and realizing the vision of a connected future.

Ali Al Hashemi, Group CEO of Yahsat, highlights ongoing discussions between the two companies to explore various collaboration opportunities. These discussions are part of Project SKY, the first phase of Yahsat's D2D strategy, which encompasses voice, texting, and data applications.

Earlier this year, Thuraya Telecommunications Company, a subsidiary of Yahsat, introduced Skyphone, the first universal D2D Android smartphone featuring satellite voice and SMS capabilities. Skyphone's innovative design includes a retractable satellite antenna, enabling users to extend satellite services as needed, expanding coverage to areas beyond cellular network reach. This development underscores the commitment of e& UAE and Yahsat to revolutionize satellite connectivity, making it more accessible and user-friendly for individuals worldwide.
