UAE Police cautions against passengers exiting vehicle windows
The Dubai Police General Command issued a stern warning regarding unsafe driving practices, specifically cautioning against behaviours such as allowing individuals to protrude from vehicle windows or sit on the vehicle's roof while in motion.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, authorities cited five incidents from the previous year where such actions led to accidents, resulting in various injuries from people falling off vehicles.
Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director of the General Traffic Department at Dubai Police, emphasised the inherent dangers associated with these actions, stressing that such behaviour jeopardises not only the individuals involved but also poses a risk to others on the road. Violators of these regulations, as outlined in the Federal Traffic Law, face severe penalties, including a 60-day vehicle impoundment, a fine of 2,000 dirhams, and 23 traffic points. Additionally, Decree No. 30 of 2023 allows for the impoundment of vehicles, with release costs reaching up to 50 thousand dirhams.
Major General Al Mazrouei condemned the practice of exiting windows or sitting on vehicle roofs as reckless conduct that could lead to catastrophic consequences in the event of an accident or sudden vehicle stoppage. He emphasised the need for collective efforts to reduce traffic accidents, underscoring that many incidents stem from non-compliance with traffic laws. Upholding traffic safety, therefore, becomes a shared responsibility among all members of society, necessitating adherence to positive driving behaviours and a sense of accountability towards oneself and others.
Highlighting the magnitude of the issue, Major General Al Mazrouei revealed that the General Traffic Department recorded 1,183 violations related to unsafe driving practices in the previous year, leading to the seizure of 707 vehicles. This underscores the imperative for concerted efforts to foster a culture of responsible driving and adherence to traffic regulations to mitigate the risk of accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
