The decree, officially named His Majesty Decree No. 61 of 2023, carries significant consequences for violators, including fines of up to 100,000 dirhams.
Preserving Dubai's Food Security and Environment
The issuance of the decree aligns with Dubai's commitment to ensuring food security and upholding the highest standards of public health and safety. The primary objectives include preserving the purity of the environment, preventing the proliferation of unplanned farms, and fostering the well-being of the emirate's livestock. This initiative is part of Dubai's broader food security plan, emphasizing sustainable agricultural practices.
Exclusions and Scope of Application
With several exceptions, the order applies to the farms that Dubai residents have been allotted. The Dubai Camel Racing Club-supervised farms, the Dubai Municipality's winter camps, and any other categories determined by the Dubai Ruler will not be subject to the conditions of the order.
Supervision and Implementation
Farm matters in Dubai are overseen and monitored by the Office of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for Procurement and Finance, in partnership with the Dubai Municipality. Among their duties are the provision of veterinary services, the management of farm animals, and the acquisition of necessary permissions for specific urban agricultural regions. In collaboration with the Office of the Dubai Ruler, the municipality also handles issues relating to animal registration and epidemics that affect livestock.
Enforcing compliance and ensuring sustainable practices
With this decree, Sheikh Mohammed aims to curb unauthorized farming activities, promote responsible land use, and maintain a balance between agricultural development and environmental conservation. The stringent measures underscore Dubai's commitment to sustainable practices, reflecting its broader vision for a harmonious and ecologically conscious future.
