UAE experiences a slight earthquake that is perceptible to residents
Monday night, the National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) reported that a minor earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale took place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
As reported by the National Seismic Network, the seismic incident occurred in Masafi at precisely 11:01 pm.
A Slight Sensation with No Impact
While the tremor was perceptible to residents, the NCM assured them that it had no discernible impact. Khalifa Al Ebri, the Director of the Department of Seismology at the NCM, emphasized that due to the UAE's classification under low to moderate seismicity, there is no cause for concern among the local population.
Geographical Context
Al Ebri explained that the UAE's location on the Arabian Tectonic Plate, interacting with the Eurasian Plate, contributes to its low to moderate seismic activity. The Zagros mountain belt, marking the boundary of these plates, is recognized as one of the most seismically active regions globally. Despite the occasional occurrence of tremors, they typically do not affect the country's buildings or infrastructure.
Reassurance for Residents
Highlighting the safety of the UAE, Al Ebri reassured the public, stating that frequent tremors with magnitudes ranging from two to three on the Richter scale are common. Only sensors are able to detect the majority of these tremors, which go unnoticed by locals. The director emphasized that the country's infrastructure remains resilient to such seismic activities.
Continuous Monitoring
The NCM plays a vital role in providing timely earthquake information and publishing reports on local, regional, and significant global seismic events. This service aids residents in staying informed and connected, especially those with families and friends in other regions. The NCM's smart application allows users to access the latest earthquake data, demonstrating the organization's commitment to continuous monitoring and analysis by its team of specialists and seismologists operating 24/7.
