Dubai RTA Announces Expansion of "Bus on Demand" Service to Business Bay
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has expanded its 'Bus on Demand' service to Business Bay after a successful trial period.
Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at RTA's Public Transport Agency, emphasized the move's aim to enhance the mass transit network and alleviate congestion in crucial areas, responding to rising demand in Business Bay, a key business district.
The 'Bus on Demand' service extension, which incorporates vital areas and integrates with metro and tram stations, has garnered positive feedback from commuters. Shakri highlighted the service's utilization of a smart response system, adjusting bus availability according to user demand. Utilizing mini public buses and a smart app, passengers can specify their journeys and pay fares seamlessly, providing a solution for first- and last-mile trips and connecting residential areas to mass transit stations.
RTA conducted a comprehensive survey before the service's launch, taking into account demographics, vehicle ownership rates, mobility options, and preferences, drawing insights from global best practices. Criteria included comfort, punctuality, accessibility, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability, ensuring alignment with international standards and avoiding competition with existing public transport systems.
To effectively tailor the service, the initiative also considered factors such as land use, commercial activities, rider demographics, and population density. The service operates through the Dubai Bus On Demand app, which is available in major app stores. It uses 14-seater buses with flexible schedules. Drivers can communicate directly with users via the app, ensuring efficient pickups within covered areas: Al Barsha, Al Nahda, Dubai Silicon Oasis, and now Business Bay. Later this year, RTA plans to expand across the emirate.
RTA's expansion of the 'Bus on Demand' service to Business Bay reflects a strategic effort to enhance public transportation accessibility, address commuter needs, and contribute to sustainable urban mobility in Dubai.
