UAE Ministry introduces new mechanism to enhance protection of IPRs for creative works on digital platforms
The UAE Ministry of Economy has introduced a novel approach to bolster the safeguarding of intellectual property rights (IPRs) for creative content on digital platforms.
This new approach aims to create a secure space for holders of exclusive rights, aligning with global standards and in collaboration with the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). Its primary focus is on rectifying any infringements on intellectual property rights, be it in literary works or multimedia content like videos, while also promoting awareness regarding the significance of respecting property rights across diverse content platforms.
Furthermore, it seeks to educate rights holders about the ministry’s tools and services available to shield their rights from infringement and piracy.
Speaking on behalf of the UAE, Dr. Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for Intellectual Property Rights Sector at the Ministry of Economy, underlined the country's will to update its IP laws and procedures to reflect current trends and developments in technology.
He highlighted the nation's efforts in fostering a conducive environment for creativity and innovation, positioning itself as a premier destination for creators worldwide. Al Muaini underscored the UAE's drive to enhance the contribution of the creative economy to the national GDP, viewing it as a pivotal factor for economic growth in the coming decades.
The Ministry of Economy unveiled a new mechanism, to be implemented in collaboration with TDRA, aimed at promptly restricting and blocking electronic platforms that infringe upon the rights of authors and creators by displaying their works without proper authorization.
Additionally, the ministry activated the ‘InstaBlock’ initiative, part of its recent intellectual property system initiatives. It involves establishing a monitoring center, in partnership with relevant entities, to detect infringements on intellectual property rights and block non-compliant websites.
Through the ‘InstaBlock’ initiative, the ministry will provide a swift ‘Live Ban’ service to address complaints related to copyright infringement in live online streaming, facilitated by a joint group comprising ministry and TDRA representatives and rights holders.
Al Muaini emphasized the timely launch of this mechanism alongside the onset of Ramadan, a period marked by the proliferation of creative works on digital platforms, including series, documentaries, entertainment programs, and sports tournaments.
