UAE farmers compete for up to Dh20,000 prize at Hatta Farming Festival
The Hatta Farming Festival, running until February 27, offers a unique opportunity for locals and tourists alike to immerse themselves in the agricultural heritage of the region.
Operating from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., this five-day event is open to everyone, with no entry fee required. Its primary goal is to bolster the efforts of local farmers, traders, and small businesses while also promoting tourism by showcasing the rich cultural and natural assets of Hatta.
At the festival, visitors can witness firsthand the skills and produce of local farmers, who are competing for prizes totaling up to Dh20,000. The diverse array of offerings includes vegetables, fruits, eggs, jam, and ghee, with participants contending in categories such as 'Best Productive Farm' and 'Best Productive Barn'. Additionally, attendees have the opportunity to explore the historic Hatta Falaj Al Sharia, an ancient underground irrigation tunnel spanning 587 meters. Restored in 2019 by Dubai Municipality, the falaj serves as a testament to the region's agricultural ingenuity, collecting water from nearby mountains to nurture the surrounding plains.
In addition to admiring the agricultural displays, visitors can engage in over 25 workshops focusing on sustainability-related topics like food security, water purification, and cultivating one's own food. An animal auction provides insights into livestock management, while children can participate in nature-themed drawing and storytelling sessions, fostering an appreciation for gardening and agriculture from a young age.
Participating organizations in the Hatta Farming Festival include the Hatta Traders Council, Dubai Municipality, Roads and Transport Authority, and Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE). Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of DFRE, stated that the event's goal is to help people feel more connected to nature and local businesses while also encouraging them to do their part to protect the environment.
