UAE announces Abu Dhabi Medical City for Women and Children Health establishment
Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has given the green light for the creation of a dedicated medical city focusing on women and children's health in Abu Dhabi.
Comprehensive Facilities for Women's and Children's Health:
Among the sanctioned initiatives are plans for a medical city featuring Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for paediatric care, the Corniche Hospital specialising in women's and newborns' health, a rehabilitation centre, and a mental health facility dedicated to women and children.
Enhancements to the Healthcare Ecosystem:
The proposed medical city, according to Sheikh Khaled, will significantly improve Abu Dhabi's healthcare system and further solidify the city's standing as a top healthcare destination. The regulation also calls for the construction of first-rate specialised facilities that are in line with a preventive and integrated healthcare system.
Centre of Excellence in Paediatric Care:
Sheikh Khaled was briefed on SKMC's plan to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in paediatric care. This facility will offer a wide range of services across 29 specialties, including oncology, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, transplantation, gastroenterology, and cardiac medicine. The CoE will boast a capacity of 250 beds, with dedicated facilities for mental health services and long-term paediatric healthcare.
Corniche Hospital Expansion and Relocation:
To enhance the integrated services system within the upcoming medical city, the suggestion involves relocating the facilities of Corniche Hospital to the vicinity of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City. Anticipated to open in 2027, the hospital, featuring 205 beds and a notable focus on maternity and paediatric care, aims to strengthen healthcare services in the region.
Comprehensive Women and Children's Health Services:
Along with a facility that specialises in mental health care for women and children, the medical city will be home to the Salma Children's Rehabilitation Hospital. Specific treatment in obstetrics and gynaecology, fertility and assisted reproductive services, and women's mental and general health will be given by over 120 physicians and 460 nursing and midwifery specialists.
The creation of this specialised medical city is a step towards improving Abu Dhabi's healthcare services for women and children by fusing cutting-edge technology, research, and innovation to address the city's changing healthcare demands.
