This decision was made after the Moon-Sighting Committee convened to assess reports regarding the sighting of the crescent marking the start of Ramadan for the year 1445 AH. Despite receiving no reports confirming the crescent sighting, the committee concluded that Tuesday, March 12, 2024, will mark the first day of Ramadan, with Monday, March 11, 2024, being the final day of the preceding month, Shaaban.

The ministry's statement emphasized the absence of crescent sightings, leading to the determination of the start date for Ramadan. Oman News Agency reiterated this information on its official channels, underscoring that the holy month's commencement aligns with the committee's decision.

Ramadan holds immense significance in the Islamic calendar, being observed fervently by millions worldwide through fasting, prayer, and acts of charity. Positioned as the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar, Ramadan's date varies slightly each year due to the calendar's lunar nature, consisting of either 354 or 355 days annually. The term "Ramadan" derives from the Arabic root word "ramidha," meaning "scorching heat" or "dryness," encapsulating the spiritual and physical challenges faced during this period.

During Ramadan, Muslims adhere to a daily fast from dawn until sunset, breaking it each evening with the traditional meal called iftar, often featuring dates and other customary foods. This fasting period fosters self-discipline, spiritual reflection, and empathy for the less fortunate, embodying the core tenets of Islam.

The official confirmation of Ramadan's commencement on March 12, 2024, underscores the significance of this sacred month, inviting Muslims worldwide to engage in acts of devotion, reflection, and communal solidarity.
