Philippines announces tax-free income and a 24-month visa for digital nomads
Legislation to provide 12-month visas, renewable for an extra year, to those on "workations," or widely known as "digital nomads," is now being finalised in the Philippines.
The digital nomad visa is subject to certain requirements outlined in the proposed bill, House Bill 8165, including being at least eighteen years old, proving one's income is from sources outside the Philippines, having current health insurance, having no criminal record, and paying the Immigration Bureau's processing, entry, and exit fees.
Responding to remote work trends
The introduction of legislative measures responds to the increasing trend of remote work, positioning the Philippines as an attractive destination for digital nomads. The Digital Nomad Visa facilitates the relocation of remote workers who wish to reside in the Philippines while serving clients or employers from abroad. Initially valid for one year, the visa can be extended for an additional year, provided applicants meet the stipulated criteria. A notable advantage of this visa is the exemption from local income tax, which serves as a significant incentive for digital nomads seeking a favourable tax advantage.

The wide definition of "digital nomads," however, has drawn criticism, leading to requests for tighter documentation and security measures. The Philippine House of Representatives' Justice Committee has put out legislation that expressly forbids visa holders from taking jobs with regional online gaming firms. In order to handle possible misuse and provide a strong verification system, security agencies are being consulted.
